Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Genital warts can be treated with medications or by freezing. These treatments do not suppress the HPV infection. A person who has been treated can pass it on even if the warts are no longer visible. Genital warts are a viral infection caused by a type of the human papillomaviruses (HPVs) that spread through sexual contact from one sexual partner to another. These warts are characterized by grey, flesh-colored growths that look like cauliflower. Genital warts are also called venereal warts. They are usually painless but induce itchiness, discomfort, and pain in some cases. Of the sexually transmitted infections, genital warts are the most common type. If you have sexual intercourse with a partner who has genital warts, there is a very high probability of the infection passing on from your partner to you.

Genital warts affect women more than men. In women, genital warts if left untreated can develop into cancerous warts and cause cervical cancer. Genital warts can also cause complications during pregnancy in women, and in males, it can also lead to different types of cancers such as penal cancer.

These are benign and harmless in the beginning. Some genital warts disappear on their own without any treatment, but that does not mean that the HPV isn’t present in the body. The time taken for genital warts to appear and then disappear depends on multiple factors that vary from person to person. They can take a few months to several years.

Symptoms of Genital Warts

Genital warts are only transmitted if a person is involved in sexual activities. However, the warts may take time from a few weeks to even several months to develop and show any symptoms. Genital warts are difficult to see with the naked human eye. However, they can be felt as small, tiny bumps on the genital areas.

In males, this infection appears on:

• Thighs
• Groin
• Scrotum
• Penis
• Anus

In females, the infection appears on:

• Inside or outside vagina
• Inside or outside anus
• Cervix

Other non-physical symptoms of genital warts include:

• Itching
• Bleeding from genital areas
• Burning sensation
• Discharge from vagina

Causes of Genital Warts

Genital warts are caused by a few types of HPV. It is a sexually transmitted infection that spreads via skin-to-skin sexual contact. It cannot spread through sharing a towel, toothbrush, shaking hand. There are many strains (types) of HPV, but not all of them cause genital warts. The initial reason for genital warts is unknown, but the spread of HPV infection from one person to another is due to activities involving sex.

Risk Factors of Genital Warts

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most sexually active people contract genital warts at some point in their lives. The risk factors for genital warts are:

• Smokers
• People of ages under 30
• Weak immune system
• People with history of sexual, child abuse
• Being a child of a mother who contracted the virus during childbirth
• Unprotected sex
• Multiple sexual partners
• Oral sex
• Being sexually active at a very young age

Preventive Measures of Genital Warts

You can take preventive measures to reduce the chances of contracting this infection. These are:

• Avoiding sexual activity while getting treatment
• Using protection for sexual activity
• Spermicides, hormonal birth control methods
