Approximately 30% of the population complains of having bad breath. Halitosis (Latin for “bad breath”) is common after a garlicky meal or when first waking up in the morning. Some beverages (such as alcoholic beverages or coffee) and tobacco smoking are also causes of temporary halitosis.

    Possible Causes of Bad Breath

Struggling with Bad Breath can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from poor hygiene to liver failure. Let’s take a closer look at them.

    1. Obstruction of the Bowel

Intestinal obstructions are life-threatening medical emergencies that occur when a blockage forms in your large or small intestine. A blockage in your intestines can cause breath that smells like feces due to feces trapped inside your intestines as well as the food you’ve eaten that can’t move down your intestines.

Anything you eat when you can’t pass a bowel movement ferments in your digestive tract, causing bad breath. Aside from unpleasant breath odor, someone with an intestinal obstruction may experience the following symptoms:

    • Loss of appetite
    • Bloating
    • Abdominal swelling
    • Constipation
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain
    • Severe abdominal cramps
    • Inability to pass gas or stool

    2. Sinus Infections

Sinus and respiratory infections can make your breath smell like feces. Bronchitis, viral colds, strep throat, and other illnesses can all cause these. Bacteria can cause an extremely unpleasant odor in your breath when they move from your nose into your throat. Other sinus infection symptoms may include:

    • Thick, yellow-green nasal drainage
    • A low-grade fever
    • Irritability and fatigue
    • Postnasal drip with nausea, vomiting, cough, or sore throat
    • Swollen eyes
    • Headache

Children are more prone to have sinus infections after a viral cold, but both can present with similar symptoms.

    3. Liver Failure

Acute or chronic liver failure can occur. Acute liver failure can occur unexpectedly and necessitates immediate medical attention. Due to diarrhea and any resulting dehydration, it can also cause the breath to smell like feces. A person suffering from liver failure may experience the following symptoms:

    • Loss of weight
    • Jaundice
    • Diarrhea
    • Fatigue
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea
    • Bad breath

    4. Vomiting

Prolonged vomiting and dehydration can result in Struggling with Bad Breath due to dry mouth. Saliva cleans your mouth and reduces odour, but in extreme cases of dehydration, you won’t produce enough saliva. If you vomit as a result of a bowel obstruction, your breath may smell like feaces.

    5. Poor Hygiene

Your breath may smell like poop if you have poor oral hygiene. Failure to brush and floss your teeth properly and on a regular basis can cause your breath to stink because plaque and bacteria build up on and between your teeth.

Food that isn’t removed by flossing accumulates between your teeth, can cause struggling with bad breath.
Gum disease can cause bad breath too. It is caused by a lack of oral hygiene. Neglecting your oral health also promotes the growth of bad bacteria in the mouth, which can cause an odor on your breath. Dentures that aren’t cleaned properly on a daily basis can also lead to severe halitosis.

    Tips to Improve Bad Breath

    Here are some helpful hints to deal the Struggling with Bad Breath;

    • Brush your teeth daily with fluoridated toothpaste.
    • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco-based products.
    • Before going to bed, rinse and gargle with an alcohol-free mouthwash.
    • If you have dry mouth, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and use over-the-counter moisturizing agents like a dry mouth spray, rinses, or dry mouth moisturizing gel. If you don’t notice any improvement, you should consult with an oral medicine specialist.
