How to use prednisolone eye drops?

Use eye drops exactly as directed by your doctor.

Before using eye drops, always read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet on the packaging for detailed information and a list of expected side effects.

Commonly, the eye drops are used every 1-2 hours, the first two days until the symptoms resolve. As your symptoms show improvement, reduce the frequency to four times a day for a few days, before weaning off.

Prednisolone eye drops should only be used for a short period of time. Do not use it for more than a week unless advised by your doctor.

What is the price of prednisolone eye drops in Pakistan?

The price of prednisolone eye drops in Pakistan usually ranges from 80 to 100 PKR.

    Directions for use:

    • Wash your hands well before using the drops..
    • Tilt your head slightly back and pull your eyelids downwards to create a pocket.
    • Place the bottle (or disposable unit) upside down close to your eyes. Avoid touching your eyes when doing this.
    • Apply enough pressure to gently drip a drop into your eye. Use the second drop only if you miss the first drop into your eye.
    • Close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes and gently press the side of your nose where the corners of your eyes meet your nose. This will keep the drops from dripping and keep them in your eyes.
    • If you are instructed to use eye drops in both eyes, repeat this process for the other eye. (One dose is sufficient for both eyes.)
    • Replace the cap (or discard it if using a single-use unit).

    Alternatives to prednisolone eye drops

    Following is the list of alternative options to prednisolone ophthalmic suspension;

      • AK-Pred
      • Econopred
      • Econopred Plus
      • Omnipred
      • Pred Forte
      • Pred Mild
      • Prednisol

What are the side effects of prednisolone eye drops?

All drugs have potential risks and side effects that may improve over time as your body gets used to the drug. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen over time, tell your doctor right away.

    Allergic reactions:

    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
    • Swelling (face, lips, mouth, or throat)
    • Peeling skin
    • Rash
    • Hives

Occasionally people may be allergic to eye drops, especially if they contain preservatives. If you develop a rash, swelling, or itching around your eyes, stop using the eye drops and seek advice from your doctor.

What are the risks and warnings associated with the use of prednisolone?

    • Long-term use of prednisolone (Pred Forte) increases the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, certain eye infections, and corneal thinning.
    • Do not take prednisolone (Pred Forte) if you have herpes simplex or any other type of bacterial or viral eye infection.
    • Tell your doctor about blurred vision, eye pain, or other changes in vision.
    • If you are taking eye drops for a long time, you may need regular eye exams to check your eye pressure.

What is the typical dosage of prednisolone eye drops?

The typical dose for prednisolone (Pred Forte) is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times a day. It is recommended to shake the bottle well before use.

    Overdose:

Symptoms of corticosteroid overdose can include:

    • Altered mental status with agitation (psychosis)
    • Burning or itching skin
    • Convulsions (seizures)

    Interaction with other medications:

Prednisolone (Pred Forte) may interact with certain medications or supplements. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about any other medications or supplements you are taking (including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements).

    1. How long can you use prednisolone eye drops after cataract surgery?

In general, prednisolone is recommended 4 times daily for the first 2 weeks after routine cataract surgery, then reduced to 2 times a day for the next 2 weeks and then discontinued. Please follow your doctor’s advice for accurate dosage recommendations.

    2. What to do if you miss a dose?

If you miss a dose and it has only been a few hours, use the drops as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and wait until your next dose.
