Laser Eye Treatment

In this modern world with advanced technology, we can easily say that the dark days of struggle in regards to spectacles and contact lenses might as well be behind us today.

Many vision problems can be treated by the popular laser eye surgeries today that can reduce and disregard the requirement for you to wear spectacles or contact lenses. These techniques help correct various refractive errors or issues due to eyeballs or cornea shaped imperfectly. The refractive errors that may call for a laser eye surgery are generally 4 as highlighted in the text below:

4 Vision Problems That Call For a Laser Eye Surgery:

Nearsightedness (myopia):

To the near-sighted people, objects nearby appear sharp but the distant ones appear blurred. This occurs because of the greater than normal length of the eyeball or excessive curvature of the cornea. Instead of on the retina, images are focused before it resulting in blue images.

blurry vision

Farsightedness (hyperopia):

Conversely, to the far-sighted people, distant objects appear clear, but things nearby appear blurred. In this case, the problem is because of the shorter than normal eyeball or a flat cornea. Images are focused on the retina instead of on it.

Astigmatism:

In these patients, objects appear blurred or unclear no matter how close or far the object is because the shapes of cornea and lens both are such that images cannot be focused distinctly on the retina.

Presbyopia or Aging eye:

Old people have eyes that lose the ability to alter their focus due to natural aging. It is common among people of ages between 40 and 50. This problem cannot be corrected. Although it can make improve one’s distant vision, it might also worsen his near vision.

Laser Eye Surgery Techniques:

LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis):

This is the most popular laser eye surgery technique that accounts for 90% to 95% of laser vision correction. It has the most diverse range of uses. It can permanently change the shape of one’s cornea. The technique involves the use of a microkeratome, a knife, required to cut a hinged flap of the cornea which may instead also be made with a specially designed laser particularly for this process. The flap is then folded back in a way so as to display stroma, the middle segment of cornea. A portion of the stroma is vaporized using computer-controlled excimer that releases and then the flap is swapped. This surgery is quite expensive and may cost from Rs40,ooo to Rs50,000 in Pakistan. This is also the most popular technique in Pakistan.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy):

This is another laser eye technique that makes the use of lasers to eradicate the external covering of the cornea and to reshape it. This refractive procedure removes little quantities of tissue from the external surface of the cornea and thus slightly alters the cornea shape. Recovery through this process takes longer as compared to that through LASIK.

LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis):

This surgery is created by a combination of LASIK and PRK surgery techniques recommended for those not allowed to have LASIK. An alcohol solution is used to loosen the covering over the cornea to move it aside. Then the cornea is reshaped using a laser.

LTK (laser thermal keratoplasty):

It is a laser eye procedure especially to correct farsightedness and astigmatism. The cornea is reshaped using heat in this technique. One benefit of LTK is that it’s a “no touch” process meaning, chances of infections and losses of vision are diminished.
