Islam is the religion of purity. It teaches us to maintain cleanliness of ourselves and our environment. And in the month of Ramadan, Muslims take extra care of their cleanliness. Fasting actually refrains us from doing many things. It does not only forbid from drinking and eating. So the question is, does biting nails break fast?

Fasting is intended to remind Muslims of those who are less fortunate and to reinforce the need to be thankful. On the other hand, it helps in practicing good deeds, piousness, and cleanliness. Fasting during the month of Ramadan is mandatory for all healthy adult Muslims as one of the five pillars, or duties, of Islam.

Biting your nails is not a healthy habit. It allows a lot of germs to enter your body. Nail biting can cause severe health issues if it is done on regular basis. During fasting, biting your nails is not allowed in Islam. Only biting your does not break your fast. But it is advisable to refrain from biting also.

But eating the nail during fasting will break the fast. It is not allowed in Islam to eat anything like your chapped lips, nails, etc. during fasting.

    Nail Biting As A Habit:

Nail biting (NB), also known as onychophagia, is a prevalent but unresolved medical issue in both children and adults. Chronic nail biting is classified as an obsessive-compulsive disorder by doctors because the person has difficulty stopping.

People frequently want to stop and attempt to quit several times without success. Because people with onychophagia are unable to stop their behavior on their own, telling a loved one to stop is ineffective.

It needs a lot of effort to leave this habit. But fasting in Ramadan can help you to refrain from nail biting. It needs commitment to control nail biting.

    Fasting In Ramadan:

It is not permissible for a fasting person to consume any food, drink, or medicine. Eating involves introducing any substance into the stomach via the mouth, regardless of whether it is harmful or beneficial, such as pebbles, nails, skin, and so on.

This is the ruling of Quran and Sunnah. Moreover, this is the viewpoint of the four imams, and there is no disagreement among them.

Even swallowing of blood from bleeding gums can break the fast. So it is important to keep check on these things while you are fasting.

    Does Biting Nails Break Fast?

Unless parts of the nails are deliberately swallowed, biting the nails does not break one’s fast. That mean unintentional biting and swallowing of nails do not break the fast. But try to avoid biting the nails during fasting, so that the chances of swallowing are less.

However, according to specialist doctors, a Muslim should refrain from performing this act because it could be harmful to one’s health.

    Side Effects Of Nail Biting:

    Nail biting does not only a problematic thing for your fasting. But it has also many side effects like;

    • Nails that appear abnormal
    • Pain in the vicinity of the nail
    • Illness caused by bacteria and viruses passing from your fingers to your mouth and cause tooth damage such as chipping, misalignment, and dental resorption
    • Pain and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint
    • Fungal infections of the nail plate and surrounding skin

How To Avoid Nail Biting During Fasting?

Maintain short nails. It is less tempting to bite when you have short nails. Replace the bad habit of nail-biting with a good one. Find out what triggers you. So you don’t have to deal with them. Stop biting your nails gradually so that you don’t do this during fasting also.
