    Kidney stones:

Kidney stones are hard masses formed inside the kidneys, Urether, or urinary bladder. These stones are made up of Uric acid, Calcium Oxalate and Calcium Phosphate, and some other acidic salts.

They can vary in size, ranging from a few millimeters to 5 inches.

Do you ever wonder how these stones are formed? , Well here are few kidney stone causes:

    Causes of Kidney Stones:

Most people will develop kidney stones at some point in their lives and wouldn’t even notice it. It is better to know about the kidney stone causes to avoid developing kidney stones that can cause trouble for you.

    • Diet
    • Dehydration
    • Genetic Diseases
    • Obesity

Above mentioned causes are a few typical kidney stone causes that can lead to serious kidney problems.

The following symptoms indicate the presence of kidney stones:

3 Most Advance Kidney Stone Treatments In Pakistan

    Extracorporeal Shock Wave lithotripsy(ESWL):

Lithotripsy is a procedure that breaks up stones in the kidney and ureter. This procedure involves using shock waves that turn kidney stones into tiny pieces which pass out from your body through urine. Lithotripsy is among the most advance treatments in Pakistan.

    How it’s done?

Extracorporeal Lithotripsy is done outside the body.

High-energy shock waves, also known as sound waves, will flow through your body, guided by x-ray or ultrasound, until they reach the kidney stones. When this begins, you may sense a tapping sensation if you are awake. The waves shatter the stones into small fragments.

This procedure takes 45 to 60 minutes, and a tube called a stent may be passed through your bladder into your kidneys. This tube will drain out all the urine and small pieces of kidney stones.

    Risks involved in this procedure:

Lithotripsy is a safe-to-do procedure, but it can cause the following complications:

    • Bleeding around kidney areas.
    • Infections
    • Small pieces of stones blocking urine flow.
    • Ulcers

You may require some other medical procedures after Lithotripsy for better results.

    Ureteroscopy:

Ureteroscopy is another method used in the treatment of kidney stones in Pakistan.

Ureteroscopy is a procedure commonly done to treat stones presenting the ureter or kidney. Ureteroscopy uses a telescope(Ureteroscope) with an eyepiece at one end with a lens on the other end.

Generally, there are two different ways to perform ureteroscopy:

    • For tiny stones, the nephrologist inserts a scope that has a small basket at the end. Small stones are collected in that basket. Stones that are contained in that basket will be moved out through an extra channel in the ureteroscope.
    • Another procedure, known as the Holmium laser technique, is used in ureteroscopy. A nephrologist will extend a fiber through the scope into your kidney. A laser beam shining through that fiber will break the stones into small pieces. Then these pieces are exported out of the body with urine.

    Risks involved in ureteroscopy:

    Risks in ureteroscopy may involve:

    • Minor infection
    • Bleeding
    • Injury to the ureter.

There is a minimal chance that you will require another surgery to repair. The doctor may leave a stent to help drain out urine and waste material from your kidney along with stones.

    Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy(PNCL):

Your doctor will perform this operation through a small cut in your back, using a small scope and equipment to pluck or vacuum the stones. Percutaneous (through-the-skin) nephrolithotomy or stone extraction are other names for the procedure.

    Procedure:

The doctor will make a small incision right above the kidney stone on your back. After that, They will insert a fiber-optic camera to have a look inside. They, sometimes, use a mechanical device to break them up.

A small stent will help in removing the urine from the ureter and kidneys. This stent is kept for1-2 weeks, and you will need t visit the doctor for its removal.

    Potential Risks:

    • Just like other surgeries, you may experience some complications after PCNL. But these are common and can be solved within a few weeks.
    • You might lose blood what requires a blood transfusion.
    • The infection could be another risk involving PCNL.
    • This surgery can also cause damage to kidney areas.
