When I was in grade 6, I was diagnosed with jaundice. I still remember each and everything that I had to go through that time. Not because I suffered a lot but because I was on a strict diet that I had to follow. I was a kid so I had no idea why is it so important to eat healthy for a healthy liver. But now I understand whatever we eat and drink has a direct impact on our liver function. It’s your liver that processes everything you eat and drink and helps your body take in nutrients from food. That’s why jaundice is usually related to liver disease or failure. In this article, we will discuss some important dietary tips that one must follow during jaundice recovery, so let’s have a look:

Drink A Lot Of Water:

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to help recover from jaundice. Water can literally do wonders; it not only helps in smooth digestion but also helps the liver and kidney flush out the toxins and wastes. If you are having taste bland which usually occurs in jaundice, then add some amount of lemon or grapefruit juice to water.

Consume More Fresh Fruits And Vegetables:

All fresh fruits and vegetables contain some amount of liver-friendly nutrients, but some of them are particularly beneficial for liver health. These include:

  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Papayas
  • Melons
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Turnip
  • Ginger and garlic
  • Spinach and collard green
  • Avocadoes and olives
  • Citrus fruits especially lemons, grapefruits, limes
  • Pumpkins and sweet potatoes

All these fruits and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants and fiber which help limit liver damage during metabolism and ease digestion. So, switch from a high-calorie diet to fruits and vegetables.

Whole Grains:

Just like fruits and vegetables, whole grains also contain liver-friendly nutrients including fats, fiber, antioxidants, and minerals. Oats are specifically rich in beta-glucan, which improves the liver function.

Nuts And legumes:

You can consume whole nuts and legumes which are usually rich in fiber and healthy fats. Most of them are also rich in antioxidants including vitamin E and phenolic acid. According to some studies, if consumed daily, walnuts and other tree nuts are beneficial to liver functioning.

If you find it difficult to understand about your diet during jaundice then you can keep a food diary, where you can write everything about your meals. Also, try to eat small but frequent meals rather than large ones. And also don’t use sugar in your coffee and tea. Moreover, you can consult with the dietician to get more information.
